ChatGPT Ads for Shopify Is Live: What Ecommerce Brands Need to Know

ChatGPT Ads just became much more interesting for ecommerce businesses. OpenAI has launched its first ecommerce platform integration with Shopify, allowing eligible Shopify merchants to connect their product catalogs to ChatGPT Ads and create campaigns around actual products.
For us at Avocadots, this is an update we have been waiting for. As Shopify Partners working with ecommerce businesses, we are particularly interested in what happens when Shopify's structured product data meets the conversational nature of ChatGPT Ads.
Until now, when testing ecommerce-related prompts in ChatGPT, we have often seen product recommendations presented primarily as text and links. For example, in one of our own tests asking ChatGPT for artificial plants available in Cyprus, the response returned specific products, prices and links to retailers, but the experience was still largely link-based rather than resembling the visual product advertising we are used to seeing on platforms such as Google and Meta.
ChatGPT product-feed ads introduce a very different possibility: product images, titles, ratings, prices, sale prices and brands can become part of the ad itself.
And we cannot wait to start experimenting with it.

What Are ChatGPT Ads for Shopify?
ChatGPT Ads Shopify integration connects a Shopify merchant's product catalog and measurement tools with ChatGPT Ads, making it possible to create and measure advertising campaigns using Shopify commerce data.
OpenAI selected Shopify as its first ecommerce platform partner. The ChatGPT Ads app initially became available to US-based Shopify merchants, with OpenAI announcing an international rollout for markets where ChatGPT Ads is available from 23 September 2026.
This matters because ecommerce advertisers do not need to treat ChatGPT as a completely isolated advertising ecosystem. Shopify merchants can connect the infrastructure they are already using to manage their products with this new advertising channel.
Why the ChatGPT Ads Shopify Integration Matters
Product feeds are already fundamental to ecommerce advertising.
Anyone running Google Shopping campaigns will be familiar with the basic concept: instead of manually building a separate ad for every item in a catalog, structured product information allows the advertising platform to work with products at scale.
ChatGPT Ads is now moving in this direction.
OpenAI says product-feed campaigns are designed particularly for retailers with large or frequently changing catalogs. Product feeds allow advertisers to bring more of their catalog into ChatGPT Ads, maintain current product information and create advertising at scale. OpenAI also says advertisers using product feeds have been among the strongest performers on the platform so far, although the platform remains in beta and this should not be interpreted as a performance guarantee.
Before product-feed campaigns | With ChatGPT product-feed campaigns |
Primarily individual ad creation | Catalog-based advertising at scale |
Advertiser supplies ad creative | Structured product data can populate ads |
Limited product catalog automation | Product feeds can contain large catalogs |
General landing-page advertising | Individual products can be advertised |
Standard ad creative | Product-specific images, titles, prices and other details |
For ecommerce advertisers, that is a substantial development.
How ChatGPT Ads Shopify Product Feeds Work
The Shopify integration makes connecting an existing Shopify catalog with ChatGPT Ads much easier.
For advertisers working directly through Ads Manager rather than Shopify, OpenAI also supports dedicated product feeds. These can be imported using CSV or TXT files, a hosted URL or an SFTP connection. OpenAI recommends hosted URLs or automated SFTP uploads for catalogs that require ongoing updates because manually uploaded items expire after two weeks.
Once the feed is processed, advertisers can build a Product feed campaign, associate an ad group with the relevant feed and apply product filters to determine which products can be advertised.
That means a retailer does not necessarily need to advertise its entire catalog in one ad group.
For example, an online homeware store could potentially separate:
Artificial plants
Outdoor furniture
Lighting
Home accessories
Seasonal products
Product metadata and filters can then be used to organise which parts of the catalog are eligible within individual ad groups.
This structure feels familiar if you already work with ecommerce advertising platforms, but the environment in which those products are being advertised is very different.
What Can a ChatGPT Shopping Ad Display?
This is where things become particularly interesting.
OpenAI's product-feed documentation states that product ad formats can include:
Product image
Product title
Star rating
Price
Sale price
Brand
The platform can therefore move beyond a simple sponsored text link and create a much more recognisable ecommerce experience using structured product information.
That distinction matters because ecommerce decisions are highly visual.
If somebody asks ChatGPT for three artificial plants for their office, showing a product name and a link is useful. Showing the actual plant, its price, brand and other relevant product information inside the experience gives the shopper substantially more information before they decide whether to visit the retailer.
From ChatGPT Recommendations to ChatGPT Product Ads
This is the part we are watching most closely at Avocadots.
We have already been testing how ChatGPT handles product-discovery prompts, and we have seen it recommend specific products from different retailers, including product names, prices, descriptions and direct links.
This is commercially significant because the shopping journey is different from traditional search. Instead of searching for a product, opening multiple websites and comparing the options manually, users can ask ChatGPT to identify and narrow down relevant products for them.
So far, the recommendations we have observed have been largely link-based, without the visual shopping experience consumers are familiar with from platforms such as Google Shopping. This is why we are particularly interested to see how product discovery evolves as ChatGPT introduces more structured and visual advertising formats.
There is, however, an important distinction between organic ChatGPT product recommendations and ChatGPT Ads.
OpenAI states that products uploaded through an Ads Manager product feed are currently eligible for use in advertisements only. Adding products to an advertising feed does not automatically make those products eligible to appear in organic ChatGPT recommendations.
That distinction is important for ecommerce brands.
GEO and ecommerce advertising are two separate, but increasingly connected, opportunities.
Optimising your products and wider online presence so that ChatGPT can discover and recommend them organically is one part of the strategy. Using product feeds to advertise eligible products through ChatGPT Ads is another.
For ecommerce businesses, the opportunity is increasingly about being present across both organic AI discovery and paid AI advertising.
How to Create a ChatGPT Product Feed Campaign
For advertisers using the standard Ads Manager feed workflow, OpenAI currently documents the process as follows:
Go to Tools > Feeds in ChatGPT Ads Manager and create a product feed.
Import the products using CSV/TXT, a hosted URL or SFTP.
Allow Ads Manager to process and validate the feed.
Create a new campaign and choose Product feed as the campaign type.
Create an ad group, select the feed and apply the required product filters.
Create the ad template and review how sample products appear.
Check the feed, products, budget, bidding, targeting and previews before submitting the campaign for review.
The important part is that the feed becomes the scalable data layer behind the campaign.
ChatGPT Ads Shopify Setup Is Different
If you use Shopify, you should not assume that you need to manually export your Shopify catalog and convert it into another feed format.
That workflow can still be relevant for custom feeds and advertisers working directly through Ads Manager, and third-party tools are already emerging to help transform existing Shopify or Google Merchant Center feeds into compatible formats.
But the new native Shopify integration is specifically designed to reduce this friction. OpenAI says eligible merchants can use the ChatGPT Ads app for Shopify to integrate their catalog and measurement tools with ChatGPT Ads.
For Shopify merchants, we would therefore start with the native integration rather than creating an unnecessary manual feed workflow.
ChatGPT Product Feed Ads vs Google Shopping
There are obvious similarities between ChatGPT product feeds and the infrastructure ecommerce advertisers already know from Google Shopping.
But we would not treat ChatGPT Ads as simply "Google Shopping inside ChatGPT".
Google Shopping | ChatGPT Product Feed Ads |
Primarily search and shopping-driven discovery | Conversational AI environment |
Product feeds power product advertising | Product feeds power product advertising |
Strong visual product presentation | Product-specific visual formats |
Mature ecommerce advertising ecosystem | New advertising ecosystem currently evolving |
Extensive historical campaign data | Limited historical advertiser data |
Established optimisation workflows | Advertisers are still learning what works |
The most interesting difference is the context surrounding the advertisement.
A traditional search might be:
"artificial plants Cyprus"
A ChatGPT conversation could instead contain considerably more context:
"I need two artificial plants for a dark office in Cyprus. I don't want anything too small and my budget is around €150."
That conversational context is what makes ChatGPT Ads interesting to us as performance marketers.
The advertising opportunity is not simply to appear beside a keyword. It is potentially to appear while someone is explaining the problem they are trying to solve.
What Shopify Merchants Should Do Now
We would not recommend rushing to move significant ecommerce budgets from established platforms into ChatGPT Ads.
It is too early for that.
What we would recommend is testing.
ChatGPT Ads is developing quickly, and product-feed campaigns provide ecommerce businesses with a much stronger reason to start experimenting with the platform.
OpenAI currently supports Views, Clicks and Conversions campaign objectives. For product-feed campaigns specifically, geographic targeting and exclusions for newly created campaigns are currently limited to the country level, which is another important limitation for advertisers to consider.
Early tests should therefore focus on learning:
Which products receive impressions and clicks
Which product categories perform best
How ChatGPT traffic converts
How feed quality affects presentation
Which conversational contexts generate commercially useful traffic
How results compare with established ecommerce channels
This is exactly the type of experimentation we intend to carry out as the platform develops.
Why We Are Excited About ChatGPT Ads for Shopify
At Avocadots, we work across both Shopify ecommerce and performance marketing, so this integration sits directly at the intersection of two areas we already work with every day.
We have been testing ChatGPT Ads since their introduction and documenting how the platform is evolving. We have also been observing how ChatGPT organically recommends businesses and products as part of our wider work around AI visibility.
The Shopify integration now adds another piece to that ecosystem: paid product discovery based on a merchant's actual ecommerce catalog.
We are particularly interested in seeing how visual product advertising develops inside conversations. Our existing product-discovery tests have already shown us that ChatGPT can narrow a broad shopping request down to specific products and retailers. Adding structured, visual product advertising creates an entirely new performance-marketing layer around that behaviour.
And because this is still early, we expect the format, targeting options and campaign optimisation capabilities to change considerably.
We cannot wait to start testing it.
